Majal Design School announced the launch of the “Student Support Box,” a community initiative that covers tuition fees for students unable to personally fund their education. The announcement came as a welcome prospect at a time Lebanon faces major combat and over one million Lebanese residents are displaced.
The initiative promotes Majal’s mission to make the Lebanese design scene more inclusive. “This box will help us train and empower promising talents who cannot otherwise access our classrooms,” Yasmine Dabbous, Majal’s executive manager, said. “It offers a gateway for new talents and new careers.”
To date, Majal has taught 1000+ students, 83 of which have created a new brand in design and creation and many of which have landed new jobs, including at Majal itself and at Elie Saab’s house of design.
“Our class-to-market model is evidence-based and we are confident that this new initiative will help change lives,” Pamela Mikhael, marketing manager and chairwoman of the Business Lab, said.
The support box will be funded through Majal activities such as events and exhibitions, as well as specialty workshops. It can also be sustained through individual donations and grants. The support box is open to all adult residents of Lebanon, regardless of age, gender and nationality. It may be used to fund the fees for one class or for an entire certificate.
“As long as you can demonstrate that you can’t afford the class and show us that you have enough talent, dedication and potential, then you may be eligible to apply,” Nour Tannir, program manager, explained.
