When Nour and Yasmine asked me to give the textile history class, I couldn’t be happier. History and textile are two of my favorite subjects. I had to come up with a curriculum, and I didn’t know where to start. There is so much to cover! However, I was certain of one thing: it wasn’t going to be a boring class! Below is a small insight into textiles as a technology -from Egyptian mummification to Viking sails.
Genesis of Textile Technology
We know Ancient Egyptians prepped their linen wraps to preserve their mummies. We’ve also learned how the Vikings managed to improve their ships, face harsh cold Nordic winds and go on their raids thanks a special treatment given to their sails.
In both cases, a foreign substance was added to the fabric so it can serve a specific function. So I ask you: How is that different from modern water-repellent or fire-resistant technology? An important discovery that leaves us wondering if the genesis of textile technology isn’t centuries older than what we believe …
Food for thought and we’ve only scratched the surface. I can’t wait for Majal and I, to dig and research them further. If you have any insights to share, please do reach out to us. And if you’ve made this far, then you should definitely keep an eye on registrations and enroll next term. Our time machine has a seat with your name!
